Getting this distinction right is the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first step<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in confident and compliant service.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>What a Service Animal Is:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Under the ADA, a service animal is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has been individually trained to do work or perform specific tasks for a person with a disability. You may only request that an animal be removed if it is out of control and poses a threat to others. This includes excessive barking or jumping on other people. Additionally, if the handler does not take effective action to control it, or if the animal is not housebroken.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><br \/><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Allergies and Fear Are Not Grounds for Removal:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A common concern is the reaction of other patrons. However, allergies or a fear of dogs are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> valid reasons for denying access or refusing service to a person with a service animal.
